Guwahati: The North East Media Forum (NEMF) and My Home India on Saturday announced the names of the winners of the prestigious 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards-2024.

The winners have been selected under three different categories including print, electronic and digital media.

The NEMF and My Home India, joint organizers of the annual event, also chose a veteran journalist for the ‘Lifetime Achievement category’.

In the Print media category, Mubina Akhtar (Freelance journalist) was named as the winner. In the Electronic media category, Mridusmanta Boruah (Pratidin Times) was named as the winner. In the Digital media category, Dr Kshetrimayum Chitrabhanu Devi (Imphal Review of Arts & Politics) was named as the winner.

Veteran journalist Kishore Seram has been selected by the jury for the ‘Lifetime Achievement Awards’.

Farhana Ahmed from The Assam Tribune for her stories on human trafficking and forced migration got special mention in the print media category by the jury.  Similarly, Aparamita Das also got a special mention by the jury for her photo essay under the still photography category.

An official from the organizing committee said, “No awards have been given in videography category as there was no entry.”

The award ceremony will be held on December 11 at the Constitution Club in New Delhi.

The Awards have been bestowed upon journalists and media persons based in the Northeast and other parts of India for their efforts in promoting the northeastern region through reporting and story-telling.

The first Kalyan Barooah Awards took place on the same day last year. In fact, the Awards commemorate the birth anniversary of one of the most prominent journalists from Assam, late Kalyan Barooh. Barooah and his wife Nilakshi Bhattacharya passed away in 2021 due to Covid19 disease.

Barooah was associated with The Assam Tribune for more than 27 years. He always highlighted different issues of the northeast in general, and Assam in particular, at the national platform through his writings.

Recognising Barooah’s contributions to the development of the northeastern region, founder of “My Home India”, a social welfare organization, Sunil Deodhar announced in 2022 giving Kalyan Barooah Awards every year in coordination with North East Media Forum (NEMF).

The announcement of instituting the awards was made during the memorial meeting in 2022.

The 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards have received several nominations from across the country following which the respected jury for the Awards decided to make three different categories including print, electronic, and digital media.

The five jury members, comprising senior journalists and eminent personalities, after a thorough review of the nominations have selected the following names as the winners for the 2nd Kalyan Barooah Awards-2024. The jury also announced the name of the winner for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
