GUWAHATI: Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria administered the oath of office to Justice Vijay Bishnoi, officially instating him as the new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on February 5.
His appointment, effective from the date of assuming charge, is a testament to his distinguished career in the judiciary.
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, to be Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” said the notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
In December 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, recommended to the Centre to appoint a new Chief Justice for the Gauhati High Court. The vacancy arose due to the elevation of Justice Sandeep Mehta to the Supreme Court.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and other distinguished guests.
Congratulating the newly appointed Chief Justice, Chief Minister Sarma expressed his best wishes on social media.
In a post, he wrote, “I congratulate Justice Vijay Bishnoi Ji on taking oath as the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court. His legal acumen, wisdom, counsel, and vast experience will greatly benefit the State. My best wishes for a fruitful tenure.”
Justice Bishnoi, who previously served as a Judge of the Rajasthan High Court, brings a wealth of legal expertise and experience to his new role.
Justice Vijay Bishnoi’s tenure as the Chief Justice is eagerly anticipated to contribute significantly to the legal landscape of Gauhati High Court and the State of Assam.
