Justice Ashutosh Kumar sworn in as Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

Guwahati: Justice Ashutosh Kumar was formally sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on Monday in a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan.

The oath of office was administered by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

Justice Kumar brings with him extensive judicial experience, having served on the benches of both the Patna and Delhi High Courts.

His appointment marks a new chapter in the Gauhati High Court’s leadership.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

“Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Justice Ashutosh Kumar, who has been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. My best wishes for his tenure,” the Chief Minister wrote in a post on X.

Born on October 1, 1966, Justice Kumar completed his schooling at St. Michael’s High School in Patna.

He graduated from St. Stephen’s College under Delhi University and went on to earn his law degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University.

He was enrolled as an advocate on July 9, 1991, at the Patna High Court, where he built a distinguished career.

Justice Kumar handled numerous high-profile criminal cases, including matters involving death sentence convicts, and also served briefly as a Government Pleader for the State of Bihar.

He was appointed as a judge of the Patna High Court on May 15, 2014. After a brief tenure at the Delhi High Court beginning January 7, 2015, he was repatriated to the Patna High Court on November 24, 2017.
