Silchar: Cachar district administration on Sunday suspended a home guard for allegedly beating a journalist with a stick when he had gone to deliver food to his sister-in-law who is admitted in a government hospital.
Biswa Kalyan Purkayastha, a Silchar-based journalist had gone to deliver food to his sister-in-law who gave birth to a baby, and was undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH).
According to reports, at around 11.20 pm on Saturday, Purkayastha had gone to SMCH with food when security personnel mis-behaved with him.
“I requested them to behave well when one of them attacked me with a stick,” the journalist said.
Pukayastha said he had gone to deliver food for the patient as doctors on Saturday evening had told the family members to give some soft food.
After the attack, the journalist went through a medical checkup on Saturday night at Satindra Mohan Dev Civil Hospital at Silchar, and the on-duty doctors reported about severe injuries on his body.
Senior police officials, including superintendent of police of Cachar, Numal Mahatta rushed to the Civil Hospital on Saturday night while the injured journalist was undergoing treatment.
On Sunday afternoon, Purkayastha lodged a first information report (FIR) at Silchar Sadar police station and the police registered a case immediately.
The accused home guard personnel, identified as S Deb, was detained and he has been suspended with immediate effect.
President of Silchar Press Club, Sankar Dey condemned the attack on the journalist and said they’d have condemned similar attacks on any person with equal intensity.
