Tezpur/Mangaldai/Amingaon (Assam): Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda inaugurated several healthcare initiatives in Assam on Wednesday, including a new library and informatics center at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) in Tezpur, Sonitpur district.

Nadda, accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also laid the foundation stone for a critical care block at Mangaldai Civil Hospital in Darrang district and assessed ongoing developmental projects at AIIMS Guwahati and other locations.

Despite inclement weather preventing his planned helicopter journey, Nadda travelled by road from Guwahati to Tezpur.

At LGBRIMH, he unveiled the state-of-the-art library and informatics centre, which he described as a crucial asset for advancing academic research in mental health.

“I attended the Board of Governors meeting, where several proposals were presented. All of them were approved to ensure rapid progress at the institute,” Nadda told reporters after the meeting.

Taking to social media, Nadda highlighted the significance of the newly inaugurated facilities, stating that they would empower students with resources essential for academic and research growth.

The chief minister, in a post on X, expressed pride in joining Nadda for the inauguration.

“The new facilities will boost the institute’s research capabilities, taking this great institution to the next level,” he said, adding that LGBRIMH is one of India’s oldest mental health establishments and a premier centre for psychiatric care in the Northeast.

Later in Mangaldai, Nadda laid the foundation stone for a 50-bed critical care block at Mangaldai Civil Hospital.

The initiative aims to enhance access to advanced healthcare for the region’s population.

“This critical care block is a major step towards strengthening healthcare in Assam and ensuring timely care for patients,” said a senior official from the Health Ministry.

Sarma added that the facility would serve as a critical asset for Darrang district in the future.

Nadda concluded his Assam visit with a review of ongoing development work at AIIMS Guwahati in Kamrup district, accompanied by senior officials, before departing from Guwahati.
