Guwahati: The North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) celebrated the ‘International Tea Day’ in collaboration with Golaghat Commerce College on May 21 (Wednesday).

An interactive meet between NETA members and students was held in the presence of faculty members at the college campus in Golaghat.

“Tea for Better Lives” was the theme for this year’s International Tea Day as announced by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

In his speech, NETA chairman Ajay Dhandharia highlighted that International Tea Day celebrates tea’s cultural heritage, health benefits, and economic importance.

He stressed the need for sustainable tea production “from field to cup” to ensure its benefits continue for people, cultures, and the environment for generations.

He highlighted tea’s origins, emphasizing the 200-year-old industry’s major contribution to Assam‘s socio-economic landscape

He also highlighted the health benefits of drinking tea with numerous reference and scientific evidences. He concluded his speech with a slogan – “Sip Tea and Savour Life”.

“Despite India being the world’s largest producer and consumer of black tea, our per capita consumption remains relatively low compared to many other tea-consuming nations. Therefore, our effort is to encourage Gen Z to drink more tea,” said Dhandharia.

To celebrate the occasion in a befitting manner, NETA organized the event at a college campus, which saw the participation of a large number of students.

To make it interesting a quiz competition for students and an extempore speech competition for faculty members was held which was moderated by Director of NETA Tea Acedemy, Manoj Jallan.

Dr. Utpal Sarma, the college Principal, praised NETA for celebrating International Tea Day with students. He noted that the event aimed to raise awareness among youth about tea drinking and its health benefits.
