Guwahati: Internal dissent within the Assam Congress has come to the fore as Barpeta MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed tendered his resignation from the party’s district-level Political Affairs Committee (PAC), citing a lack of implementation of key party decisions.
In a letter addressed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah, Ahmed expressed his frustration over the party leadership’s failure to act on resolutions taken during meetings at both the district and state levels.
He specifically raised concerns about the process followed for appointing block committee presidents.
Ahmed alleged that despite a clear resolution passed during the District PAC meeting on January 4, 2025—which mandated consultation with the local MLA, the MP of Dhubri HPC, and the former MP of Barpeta HPC before appointing new block presidents—this procedure was not adhered to.
“I would like to inform you that I am resigning from the District PAC Committee… appointments were not made in accordance with that resolution,” he wrote.
The MLA further criticised the state leadership, pointing to a similar decision taken during the State PAC meeting on March 30, 2025.
According to Ahmed, it was again agreed that local MPs and MLAs would be consulted before finalizing any disputed block-level appointments.
He also referenced directives from the AICC General Secretary and the Assam Congress in-charge, which instructed the state president to involve local leaders in these decisions—instructions that Ahmed claims were ignored.

“Despite clear directions from the AICC and resolutions at various levels, no effective action has been taken,” Ahmed stated.
He concluded his letter by requesting that his resignation from the District PAC be accepted, adding that he hopes his decision will be understood in the right spirit.
