Guwahati: Retired military working dogs, who have faithfully served the nation with courage and loyalty, are now embarking on a new journey of love, companionship, and healing.
These exceptional canines, known for their unique training and calm demeanour, are being adopted by schools for special needs children and benevolent citizens across India, continuing to serve in a new and meaningful way.
In a significant gesture on the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army gifted twelve retired military dogs to Asha Schools and kind-hearted individuals.
This initiative reflects the Army’s dedication not only to safeguarding the country but also to honouring the selfless service of both human and animal soldiers.
These K-9 heroes have been vital to national security, having served in various terrains and challenging operational situations.
Their roles have ranged from detecting explosives and mines to participating in avalanche rescues, search and rescue missions, tracking, and guarding.
The Indian Army has increasingly relied on indigenous breeds such as the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalyam, alongside other well-known working dog breeds, for these critical tasks.
The adoption of these retired dogs offers significant therapeutic benefits, especially for children with special needs.
Their presence helps improve social, emotional, and cognitive skills, providing a source of joy and comfort.
For families and individuals, adopting a retired military dog is a unique opportunity to bring home a loyal companion who has served the nation with utmost dedication.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General of Remount Veterinary Services (DGRVS) emphasised the essential role of the Remount Veterinary Corps in breeding, training, and deploying dogs for operational duties.
After their service, these canine soldiers are brought to the Canine Geriatric Centre at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut Cantt, where they receive top-tier care and enjoy their retirement in peace.
The Indian Army also maintains specialized Geriatric Centres for retired equine and canine soldiers, providing them with the same level of respect and care afforded to human veterans.
These centres ensure that the animals are well-cared for, with dedicated veterinary support throughout their later years.
Through this initiative, the Indian Army continues to set an inspiring example of respect, compassion, and dedication towards its silent warriors.
The bond between humans and animals is celebrated, offering these brave dogs a well-deserved and fulfilling retirement.
