Guwahati: Assam’s Chief Secretary Ravi Kota inaugurated the India Pavilion at the Summer Fancy Food Show 2025 in New York, marking the bicentennial celebration of Assam Tea.
The event underscores Assam Tea’s global legacy as a symbol of strength, flavor, and heritage since its discovery in 1823 along the banks of the Brahmaputra River.
Speaking at the inauguration, Kota highlighted Assam Tea’s dual role as a cultural icon and a driver of economic transformation.
“As we commemorate 200 years of Assam Tea, we embrace our rich legacy while charting a future of innovation and sustainability,” he remarked.
The pavilion also showcased four Assamese startups—Aromica Tea, Woolah Tea, Dorei Tea, and Earth Tea—that are pioneering innovative blends and sustainable practices.
“These brands embody the spirit of innovation brewing in Assam, and events like these provide them a global stage,” Kota added.
Small tea growers, who contribute 40% of Assam’s production, were acknowledged for their critical role in the industry.
Kota emphasised the transformative impact of bought-leaf factories and the digital efficiency of the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, which handles over 250 million kilograms of tea annually.
Assam’s tea exports reached over 100 million kilograms in 2024-25, earning approximately USD 285 million and spanning markets in the United Kingdom, Russia, the UAE, Germany, Iraq, and China.
This robust trade reflects Assam’s standing as a trusted supplier to both established and emerging markets.
Looking ahead, the Assam government plans to deepen India-US ties through technology-driven initiatives like AI and blockchain and by hosting the “Heritage to Wellness” Tea Showcase across the United States.
Memorandums of understanding with American universities and businesses will also be pursued to promote sustainability and traceability in tea production.
India’s Consul General in New York, Binaya S. Pradhan, attended the event, further reinforcing the significance of Assam Tea in strengthening global connections.
