GUWAHATI: In preparation for the voting for the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat tomorrow, strict measures have been implemented along the international border with Bangladesh.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has been reportedly tasked with sealing the India-Bangladesh border to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
In an effort to facilitate voting for Indian citizens residing outside the border fencing in No-Man’s land areas, the BSF will extend assistance to residents of four villages in the district.
Additionally, 80 polling centres have been set up adjacent to the international border and extra forces too have been deployed for enhanced vigilance, a Guwahati-based daily reported.
Mridul Yadav, the District Commissioner cum Returning Officer of Karimganj, while confirming the conclusion of the election campaign by 5 pm on April 26, said that the administration is taking all necessary steps to guarantee a peaceful electoral environment.
Yadav also told the daily that security personnel and polling officials for 98 out of 1058 booth centres in Karimganj were dispatched on Wednesday.
The remaining officials were deployed on April 25.
Notably, 94 of the polling centres have been identified as critical, with a half-section force assigned to each critical centre as per the Election Commission’s directives.
Additionally, 11 polling centres have been designated as model booths by the district election office to ensure efficient voting procedures.
Meanwhile, the Karimganj border police have intensified their presence in these areas to maintain law and order during the elections.
Furthermore, the BSF has been placed on high alert along the international border to bolster security measures.
The second phase of polling for five Lok Sabha seats in Assam – Silchar, Karimganj, Diphu, Nagaon, and Darrang-Udalguri – is scheduled for tomorrow.
Voting for Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Barpeta, and Guwahati will take place on May 7 during the third phase of Lok Sabha elections.
