GUWAHATI: The ongoing saga surrounding the alleged affiliation of an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati student with ISIS continues to unfold as Tauseef Ali Farooqui is set to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court next on April 4.
Farooqui, a fourth-year B Tech student of the Bioscience department, was detained by Assam Police under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on March 23, after allegedly pledging allegiance to the Islamic State.
His parents, who hailed from Siwan in Bihar, met him at the police station where he is currently in custody.

Speaking to reporters, Farooqui’s father, Asmat Ali Farouqui, revealed that his son had expressed intentions of discontinuing his studies, opting for different pursuits.
“Definitely, there was something which his mother knew about but kept that hidden from the others,” senior Farouqui was quoted by a national daily as saying.
Earlier, the student had sparked concerns after declaring his intentions to join the terror outfit via social media platforms and emails before vanishing from the IIT-Guwahati campus.
Assam Police located him in Hajo, Kamrup district, and detained him after a thorough manhunt.
Director-General of Police GP Singh confirmed the detention, highlighting that lawful procedures would follow.

Farooqui’s detention follows the recent arrest of Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh in Dhubri district on March 20. Haris Farooqi, allegedly the Indian head of operations of the terror outfit, and Singh, purportedly deeply indoctrinated, were intercepted post-crossing from Bangladesh.
Both individuals face multiple charges, with agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) actively involved in their cases.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the case has baffled his family, friends, and fellow students as to why a student who had just a month to complete his graduation would do such a thing.
