GUWAHATI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) bid adieu to one of its pioneering figures, Professor Chandan Mahanta on Tuesday morning. Prof. Mahanta passed away peacefully at his residence within the IIT Guwahati campus. He was 61.
He is survived by his wife Anjana Mahanta, daughter Royina Mahanta, and son Anabil Mahanta, who mourn the loss of a cherished husband and a doting father.
As the academic community mourns the loss of a visionary scholar and mentor, his near and dear ones reflect on the invaluable knowledge, immense compassion, and unwavering dedication he brought to the institution.
Renowned in the world of academia, Prof. Mahanta’s legacy at IIT Guwahati is profound. He adorned multiple hats during his tenure, including the Dean of Student Affairs, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and the Center for Environment. He was instrumental during the nascent stages of IIT Guwahati, holding the distinction of being among its first faculty members.
Prof. Mahanta’s significant contributions were not confined to the institution but reached far and wide. With numerous national and international projects under his belt, his work majorly revolved around river science and water sustainability. He remained committed to the intricate study of Northeastern hydrology, fostering a generation of students and guiding them to craft research that would not only leave an academic imprint but also contribute positively to the larger community.
His bond with the students was indeed special. Throughout his two-year-long valiant battle against the aggressive brain tumour, Glioblastoma, waves of prayers, wishes, and love flowed from the student community, which is a testament to the deep-rooted connection he had nurtured over the years.
As the institute comes to terms with the loss, his invaluable contributions will serve as guiding beacons for generations to come.
