Guwahati: Sameer Kamal, a 47-year old Assistant Professor of Mathematics of IIT Guwahati was found dead in his official residence in the campus of the prestigious institute.
Police officials said on Friday evening Sameer Kamal’s mutilated body was recovered from his official residence.
From prima facie investigations, police are of the opinion that Sameer Kamal had allegedly died by suicide about 48 to 72 hours before recovery of his body. The body was sent for post-mortem.
Officials at IIT Guwahati said Sameer Kamal had not attended duty since Tuesday, and did not even contact any of his colleagues. He was an expert on Probability and Random graphs.
Police was informed on Friday evening when neighbours in the IIT Guwahati campus complained that foul smell was coming out from Sameer Kamal’s official residence.
Police found Kamal’s body was found hanging from the ceiling fan. IIT Guwahati has issued a statement on the mysterious death of the Mathematics assistant professor.
“The institute is trying to establish contact with the family of the deceased. IIT Guwahati expresses its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. We will cooperate with the police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on the matter,” the statement said.
