GUWAHATI: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has said that the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) will study the cause of the artificial floods in Assam’s Dibrugarh town.
The union minister for ports, shipping and waterways said that a comprehensive master plan will be prepared to mitigate the problem of artificial flood based on the findings.
He appealed to the civic bodies to help find a permanent solution for the water logging in Dibrugarh.
The minister, who also serves as the MP for Dibrugarh, visited Naliapool area in Dibrugarh to inspect the drainage and sewerage system and urged the local authorities to take help of all the resources and knowledge to chalk out a sustainable and pragmatic solution to the water logging problem.
The city witnessed massive artificial floods this year, with some areas of the town still submerged.
Sonowal also called up Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in this regard. “Recently, artificial floods have disrupted life in Dibrugarh town. Today, visited the Naliapool area and inspected the drainage system with local residents. I have talked over phone with Hon’ble CM Shri @himantabiswa regarding the matter; also urged officials to take fast and effective steps for permanent solutions of the problems,” said the union minister in his X handle.
Sonowal said, “The artificial flood in Dibrugarh is a cause of concern and we must find a solution that is economically prudent, ecologically viable, and environmentally sustainable.”
A team of experts will draw a master plan and present it to the government for execution. We will ensure that this is executed in letter and spirit, Sonowal said.
