GUWAHATI: Following the massive protest after a third-year B.Tech student’s body was found hanging in the IIT Guwahati hostel room, Professor Kanduru V. Krishna, the Dean of Academic Affairs has resigned.
The IIT Guwahati authorities have confirmed the report of Professor Kanduru V. Krishna’s resignation, and said, they are discussing the issue internally, and will soon take a decision.
The students are protesting citing excessive academic pressure, which they claimed was the main factor for the student’s death at IIT Guwahati.
The deceased student hailed from Uttar Pradesh was pursuing a degree in Computer Science Engineering at IIT Guwahati, and was found hanging in his hostel room on September 9.
Within hours of the incident of the death of the student was reported, the students demanded Professor Krishna’s immediate removal from his position of academics dean.
Hundreds of students gathered outside the administration building of IIT Guwahati, waving posters and raising slogans to express their anger over unhealthy academic atmosphere.
Despite scoring good marks in the examination, many students failed due to short attendance, the students said, adding that it all happened because of Professor Krishna’s autocratic orders.
About 200 students could not get promoted to the next semester due to low attendance, and they blamed professor Krishna for it.
A section of the IIT Guwahati students claimed that the third-year B.Tech student, who was found dead in the hostel, was subject to extreme pressure.
An alumnus of IIT Delhi, Professor Kanduru V. Krishna did his Master’s degree in Mathematics from Andhra University and completed his Ph.D. in 2006.
