GUWAHATI: The educational landscape of Assam receives a significant boost as the Centre greenlit the establishment of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Marabhitha, Palasbari, Kamrup district.
In a landmark development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the approval on social media, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this pivotal decision.
Chief Minister Sarma remarked, “Following our request in 2023, Hon PM Shri @narendramodi ji has given a special gift to the people of Assam by approving an Indian Institute of Management near Guwahati, making it among the few cities to house an IIT, AIIMS, Nat’l Law Univ & now IIM.”
Spanning across 574 bighas of land in Marabhitha, Palasbari, IIM Guwahati is poised to become a cornerstone in the educational framework of Assam.
Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the transformative impact of this initiative, envisioning Assam as an education hub in the Northeast and a catalyst for economic growth.
He stated, “This will be a game-changer for Assam, making the State an education hub in Eastern India and also help fulfil our economic aspirations. I envisage these premier institutes to collaborate among themselves and industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education.”
The responsibility of preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the establishment of IIM Guwahati falls upon IIM Ahmedabad.
The DPR will be formulated in consultation with the Secretary, Higher Education Department, and Government of Assam, and subsequently submitted to the Education Ministry for further action.
Chief Minister Sarma reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting the establishment of IIM Guwahati, highlighting Assam’s proactive engagement in presenting a compelling case to the Centre.
He also highlighted the role of collaboration between premier institutes and industries in driving multidisciplinary education and fostering economic growth.
As Assam gears up to welcome the prestigious institution, the approval of IIM Guwahati stands as a testament to the region’s burgeoning educational ecosystem.
