Kokrajhar: Train services across Lower Assam and parts of North Bengal were disrupted for several hours after an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded on a railway track in Kokrajhar district shortly after midnight on Thursday, officials said.
The blast occurred about five kilometres from Kokrajhar railway station, on the line towards Salakati.
The explosion damaged nearly three feet of the track, scattering metal fragments across the area, an official confirmed.
Kokrajhar Senior Superintendent of Police Pushpraj Singh said no casualties or derailments were reported.
“The damage was restricted to a small stretch of the track, which was quickly repaired. Train movement has since resumed,” Singh said.
Railway operations were suspended through the night, affecting multiple Up and Down trains in Lower Assam and northern West Bengal until around 8 am.
Services were restored after railway and security personnel carried out detailed inspections of the affected stretch.
Authorities have stepped up security along the route and launched an investigation to trace those responsible for the blast.
