Guwahati: The Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), in collaboration with the Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), hosted the state-level World Environment Day 2025 celebrations at its Paschim Boragaon campus in Guwahati on Wednesday.

The event began with a welcome address by IASST Director Prof. Ashis Kumar Mukherjee, who stressed the importance of engaging students and researchers in environmental conservation efforts.

In his inaugural remarks, Prof. Mukherjee emphasized the role of education and innovation in tackling environmental challenges, especially plastic pollution.

He called for intensified research into biodegradable alternatives and sustained awareness campaigns.

The day’s proceedings were formally inaugurated by Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Science and Technology, Government of Assam, who launched a ceremonial tree plantation drive on the institute’s premises.

The event saw participation from faculty, researchers, students, and staff of IASST and ASTEC.

Speaking at the occasion, Mahanta highlighted the pivotal role of youth and schoolchildren in amplifying this year’s World Environment Day theme: “End Plastic Pollution.”

He underlined the importance of instilling eco-consciousness early and promoting active participation in environmental movements.

Dr. Jaydeep Baruah, Director of ASTEC, elaborated on the council’s continued efforts in promoting green initiatives, including community awareness and training programs.

Pallav Gopal Jha, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Assam, also addressed the gathering, focusing on strategies to reduce plastic pollution and the social benefits of sustainable practices.

Renowned scientist and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia, Principal Scientist at NEIST-Jorhat, attended as the special invitee.

Dr. Saikia delivered a keynote scientific lecture that captivated the audience with insights into environmental sustainability and innovation.

The celebration also featured a vibrant art competition, which drew entries from students across Assam, including participants from SC/ST communities in rural areas.

Their artworks creatively explored the World Environment Day theme, reflecting strong engagement with environmental issues.

A state-level award ceremony was also held to honour individuals and institutions for their contributions to environmental protection.

Eco Clubs from across the state were also felicitated, including Mangaldai College Eco Club, Dhemaji Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Modern English School (Baska), and Badhakara High School (Lakhimpur), for their outstanding green initiatives, as acknowledged by ASTEC.

The programme concluded with a prize distribution for the art competition winners, followed by a formal vote of thanks.
