Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly was forced to adjourn for 30 minutes on Monday after opposition lawmakers disrupted proceedings during a special one-day session convened to recommend renaming the Dibrugarh airport in honour of music legend Bhupen Hazarika.
Transport Minister Jogen Mohan introduced a government resolution seeking unanimous approval to request the Centre to rename the airport as ‘Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika Airport’, as part of celebrations marking Hazarika’s birth centenary.
However, the session quickly descended into chaos as members of the Congress and AIUDF protested vocally over Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks on the contentious issue of identifying and deporting illegal foreigners.
The opposition legislators interrupted Mohan’s speech and stormed into the Well of the House, forcing Speaker Biswajit Daimary to intervene.

While Congress MLAs eventually returned to their seats, AIUDF members continued their protest by sitting on the floor of the Assembly.
With order in the House unachievable, Speaker Daimary adjourned the session for 30 minutes.
Despite the disruption, the government is expected to press forward with its resolution to rename the Dibrugarh airport after Bhupen Hazarika, a revered cultural icon in Assam and a recipient of India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
