GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assess the flood situation in the state.
Shah assured the Assam chief minister of providing central assistance to combat the flood crisis in the state. The union minister also assured of providing support of the National Disaster Response Force.
The flood situation in Assam remains grim, with the death toll rising to more than 90 as per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). More than 5 lakh people across 18 districts are reeling under the deluge, with Assam’s Cachar being the worst-hit district.
The flood-affected districts in Assam include Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasagar.
At present, 1,342 villages in 52 revenue circles are underwater and over 25,000 hectares of crop area have been damaged. Major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, and Disang, continue to flow above danger levels at various points across the state.
Besides, embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in Dhemaji, Golaghat, Nagaon, Tamulpur, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara and Karimganj.
More than 58,000 people have sought refuge in 172 relief camps and distribution centres across 13 districts.
The home minister also spoke with the chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat and inquired about the increased water level in both states.
