Dibrugarh: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday unveiled a series of major infrastructure and development projects worth Rs 1,715 crore in Assam’s Dibrugarh, including the foundation stone for the second legislative assembly complex, as part of efforts to strengthen administrative, sports and environmental infrastructure in the state.

Shah launched the projects in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, MPs and MLAs from upper Assam, several state cabinet ministers and senior government officials.

As part of the initiative to develop Dibrugarh as the state’s second administrative hub, the Home Minister laid the foundation stone for the Rs 284 crore second legislative assembly complex and MLA hostel.

The project will feature a three-storey assembly building, a nine-storey hostel for MLAs, an 800-seat auditorium and a barrack for security personnel.

Shah also inaugurated the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex built at a cost of Rs 238 crore and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, estimated at Rs 209 crore.

The first phase includes an indoor stadium, swimming pool, football field, main gallery, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, along with hostel facilities.

According to officials, the second phase will add seating capacity for 30,000 spectators, a central playground and a full-fledged athletic track.

In addition, Shah laid the foundation stone for a Rs 292 crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre, aimed at improving the treatment of wild animals and strengthening laboratory and training facilities.

Officials said the centre will enhance coordination among forest officials, veterinarians and researchers and will include an educational and administrative block, a central laboratory, a museum, a state-of-the-art auditorium, a clinical block and a radiation-equipped laboratory.

The Home Minister also launched a Rs 692 crore project for the restoration and rejuvenation of wetlands under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.
