GUWAHATI: The GS Road in Guwahati witnessed a sea of saffron as hundreds took to the streets, waving Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) flags to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Guwahati on Tuesday evening.
Standing on the footrest of a Toyota Land Cruiser, adorned in a white kurta and dark blue half-jacket with his trademark Assamese Gamosa wrapped around him, the Prime Minister waved throughout the stretch towards Koinadhora State Guest House.
Tight security arrangements were deployed during the rally to ensure the smooth transit of the Prime Minister’s convoy.
Modi will stay the night at the guest house before tomorrow’s scheduled rally at Nalbari’s Borkura.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to inform about the sequence of events in the run-up to the rally.
“Seeing the sea of people at the Prime Minister’s rally on the eve of Ram Navami, I am confident that the BJP will win the maximum seats in the history of Assam elections,” he wrote.
Earlier in the evening, the Prime Minister touched down in Guwahati on his 27th visit to the state from West Bengal.
Modi, who addressed a poll rally in Raniganj in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal in the afternoon, became the first Prime Minister to do so in the general seat.
Arriving in a special Air Force aircraft in Assam, he was greeted by a reception of state dignitaries and leaders at Borjhar airport.
Accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state ministers Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta, as well as Director General of Police GP Singh, PM Modi’s arrival was met with heightened security arrangements.
