On International Human Rights Day, December 10, over 100 citizens staged a demonstration at the office of the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Guwahati.
Organized by Lok Jagaran Manch, Assam, the protest denounced the alleged persecution of Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh and submitted a memorandum addressed to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
The memorandum accused the Bangladesh government and Islamic fundamentalists of orchestrating and enabling atrocities against minorities, including violence, arson, looting, and abuse.
It expressed deep concern over the worsening human rights situation, calling for urgent action to protect minority communities.
A protest meeting held earlier at the Navagraha Kali Mandir premises in Silpukhuri saw prominent figures emphasizing the dire situation faced by minorities in Bangladesh.
Advocate Bijon Mahajan, delivering the keynote address, stressed the need for immediate measures to safeguard minority rights.
Intellectual Diganta Biswas Sharma criticized Bangladesh and Pakistan for failing to uphold the Nehru-Liaquat Pact, which guarantees protection for minorities.
Social activist Kailash Sharma called for the revocation of Muhammad Yunus’s Nobel Peace Prize, citing the deteriorating human rights conditions under his leadership.
The demonstrators marched through the streets of Silpukhuri before staging a sit-in outside the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh.
A delegation led by Dhruva Prasad Baishya, Bijon Mahajan, and Diganta Biswas Sharma met with the Assistant High Commissioner and formally handed over the memorandum.
The memorandum highlighted the unjust detention of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das and the forced dismissal of Hindu employees as pressing concerns.
It described the silence of the interim government as indicative of negligence and complicity.
The memorandum also called for immediate action to protect places of worship, prevent human rights violations, and ensure the safety and dignity of all minorities in Bangladesh.
The protest concluded with participants pledging continued advocacy for the rights of persecuted minorities in Bangladesh and urging international attention to the crisis.
