Guwahati: Reinforcing its rapid retail expansion, Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative brand “Purabi” on Thursday inaugurated a new milk booth near Nehru Park in Guwahati, the first to be launched under its collaboration with the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
The initiative aims to make high-quality dairy products more accessible to park-goers, morning walkers, students and residents of Guwahati city.
The booth was inaugurated by Jogen Mohan, Minister of Cooperation, in the presence of Anant Lal Gyani, Secretary, Cooperation; senior officials of GMDA and Purabi.
Under this collaboration, GMDA has provided three locations in Guwahati for the setting up of Purabi prefabricated milk booths. After today’s launch at Nehru Park, two more booths – one near Shradhanjali Kanan, RG Baruah Road and another near Atal Udyan, Adabari will be opened shortly.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Jogen Mohan praised the collaboration between Purabi and GMDA. “Purabi Dairy has been working tirelessly to empower farmers to improve milk production and provide safe, nutritious products to consumers across Assam. This initiative with GMDA will greatly benefit citizens and also contribute to strengthening the dairy ecosystem in the state. Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid a visionary transformation plan for the dairy sector of Assam, called the Assam Dairy Development Plan. He has set a target to handle 10 lakh litre per day of milk in the organised cooperative dairy sector. Setting up these milk booths is part of this grand vision,” he said.
A GMDA official expressed happiness over the partnership, saying, “We are delighted to collaborate with Purabi in setting up these kiosks at some of Guwahati’s most frequented public spaces. We see our association with Purabi as an important step toward enhancing citizen convenience while promoting access to quality food”.
Purabi products are manufactured by West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) and marketed by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL), a joint venture between the Government of Assam and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). NEDFL has been strengthening its distribution network across the region, ensuring that fresh, nutritious dairy products are readily available to consumers.
“At Purabi, our mission is to ensure that every household in Assam has access to safe, nutritious, and high-quality dairy products. By expanding our network of modern milk booths across key public spaces, we are bringing Purabi closer to the people while strengthening food security. The partnership with GMDA is an important step toward making healthy choices more convenient for citizens,” said Shri Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director of NEDFL.
The new booth joins Purabi Dairy’s expanding network of modern kiosks positioned at several strategic locations in Guwahati, including GMCH campus, ASTC – ISBT Khanapara, entrance of Janata Bhawan, opposite the Assam State Zoo and other high-traffic centres.
The prefabricated booths, procured by WAMUL under the World Bank-funded APART Project, are equipped with visi-coolers, chest freezers, deep freezers, and insulated cold-chain facilities that ensure product safety and freshness throughout the day. They are designed to enhance convenience for busy consumers while promoting healthier food choices.

Purabi Dairy continues to play a pivotal role in transforming the dairy sector of Assam, from supporting farmers and producer groups to adopting modern processing methods and expanding consumer reach. Through its innovative franchise-based kiosk model, Purabi is also creating new livelihood opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
