Guwahati: A review meeting on the progress of handloom cluster development projects was held at the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles in Guwahati, Assam, aimed at assessing implementation strategies for the socio-economic upliftment of local weavers.
The meeting was chaired by Ramendra Narayan Kalita, MLA of West Guwahati and Chairman of AMTRON, and attended by key officials and stakeholders, including N.N. Rana Patgiri, Retired Additional Director; Bidyut Dutta, Director; and Nishikanta Sharma, Assistant Director of Handlooms and Textiles.
Representatives from the Borjhar Soru Agchia Buwa Kotha Samabai Samiti Ltd., including the President and Secretary, were also present.
Discussions focused on a component-wise review of the cluster’s Detailed Project Report (DPR), including financial coordination and project implementation timelines.
Kalita announced that the second installment of funds is expected to be released by September 2025, enabling the completion of key project components by December 2025.

Addressing concerns regarding the distribution of looms, accessories, and other resources, the meeting resolved that corrective measures would be taken jointly by the implementing agency and the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles.
Officials reaffirmed the importance of the handloom sector in West Guwahati, noting its deep cultural roots and the crucial role it plays in sustaining livelihoods through traditional craftsmanship.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to empowering weavers and ensuring sustainable development in the region’s handloom industry.
