Guwahati: A crucial road connecting Hatigaon Main Road to Lakhimi Nagar, Journalist Colony, and Janakpur in Guwahati has been completely excavated by a contractor assigned to construct a culvert drain, sparking outrage among residents and daily commuters.
The excavation, carried out without prior consultation or notice to the residents, has brought traffic to a standstill, leaving people stranded and disrupting daily routines.
According to locals, the road was supposed to undergo partial construction for the culvert project. However, the entire stretch has been dug up, turning a vital link into an unusable muddy trench.
“This is sheer irresponsibility,” said one resident.
“There was no public notification, no warning. We woke up to find the road completely torn apart,” he added.
Residents of the area have expressed deep dissatisfaction with what they call an “unlawful and careless” act by the city administration. Many are calling for immediate accountability and a clear timeline for road restoration.

Local civic groups have also joined the chorus of protests, emphasizing the need for proper planning in future infrastructure projects. “Infrastructure development is necessary, but not at the cost of public convenience and without following proper procedures,” another resident commented.
Despite mounting frustration, no official statement has yet been issued by the municipal authorities.
