GUWAHATI: A suspected drug kingpin was killed, and two of his associates sustained bullet injuries during a police encounter in the Agyathuri area of Kamrup District, on Sunday.
The killed individual was identified as Salam, a notorious drug kingpin from Guwahati’s Hatigaon area.
The two injured accomplices – Hiranya Thakuria and Faizuk Haque – were immediately rushed to TRB Civil Hospital in Kamrup for medical treatment.
The incident unfolded when a three-member gang of drug peddlers, travelling in a hatchback car, encountered a team of Special Task Force (STF) Assam led by Additional SP Kalyan Pathak.
Acting on a tip-off, the STF team had intercepted the suspicious vehicle.
The drug peddlers, upon spotting the police, opened fire at the STF, prompting a swift retaliation from the latter.
In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects lost his life and other two were injured.
Additionally, police constable Hima Das sustained bullet injuries and two civilians, identified as Noor Islam and Rebati Bharali, were also caught in the crossfire and were injured.
Both civilians are currently undergoing medical treatment at TRB Civil Hospital.
Police sources revealed that Salam was a notorious drug lord who has been wanted by the law enforcement in a series of drug-related offences.
Investigations into the incident are underway, with authorities looking into the details of the encounter and the activities of the apprehended drug peddlers.
Earlier on December 2, the Golaghat Police intercepted a vehicle and seized about 90 soap boxes of heroin weighing 1.116 kg at Chungajan area of the district. The police had also apprehended one person in connection wi9th the seizure.
