Guwahati: A court in Guwahati has directed Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Bhupesh Baghel and Jitendra Singh to refrain from making any “defamatory statements” against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The order was issued after CM Sarma filed Rs 500 crore defamation case against the senior Congress leaders.

Civil Judge (Senior Division) No. 1, Nayanjyoti Sarma, who granted an ad-interim injunction after hearing the petitioner’s counsel passed the order.

As per reports, the court directed the three Congress leaders, to refrain from making, publishing, circulating or disseminating any further defamatory statements or materials concerning the Chief Minister until their appearance before the court.

In his order, Judge Sarma observed that failing to grant the ad-interim injunction could “defeat the justice” and result in multiple proceedings, indicating the court’s prima facie view that interim protection was warranted.

The Congress leaders have been asked to be present for the next hearing on March 9.

A political controversy erupted after Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family of unlawfully acquiring extensive tracts of land across the state. Speaking at a press briefing, Gogoi alleged that the chief minister’s family had appropriated approximately 12,000 bighas in various parts of Assam.

The Chief Minister has termed the claims baseless and malicious, and has challenged the Congress leaders to substantiate their allegations, seeking Rs 500 crore in damages if they fail to provide proof.
