GUWAHATI: A Guwahati-based National Award-winning film producer has lodged a complaint against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly disrespecting Mahatma Gandhi during one of his election campaigns.
Luit Kumar Barman, while sharing a copy of the FIR filed at Guwahati’s Hatigaon Police Station on social media, expressed his concern over the alleged disrespectful remarks made by PM Modi towards the Father of the Nation.
He drew parallels to his past actions, mentioning how he filed a complaint against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Dispur Police Station during the coal gate scam.
“In his election campaigning, our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi stated that our father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi is known to the world till a movie is made on him. This is a highly derogatory statement and cannot be acceptable by a citizen of India, whom we consider as the father of the nation and that was taught in our school also,” read the complaint.
According to the complaint, PM Modi allegedly made derogatory remarks about Mahatma Gandhi during one of his election speeches, suggesting that Gandhi was unknown to the world before a film was made on him.
Barman expressed strong condemnation, stating that such comments defame not only Mahatma Gandhi but also the people of India.
“As a citizen, we cannot accept insult to Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi is larger than life, and no film is required to introduce him to the world. By comparing Mahatma Gandhi with a film, Narendra Modi has defamed Mahatma Gandhi along with the people of India. Therefore, I request you to take action against Narendra Modi under the relevant section of the law,” Barman added in the FIR.
Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during an interview with a news channel, remarked that the “world did not know of Mahatma Gandhi till the film Gandhi was made” and said those whose “ideological ancestors” were involved in Gandhi’s assassination can never follow the path of truth shown by him.
The complaint has sparked debates and discussions on social media platforms, with many expressing their support for Barman’s initiative while others await further developments regarding the legal proceedings.
