GUWAHATI: A sea of lotus-imprinted saffron and green flags engulfed the road from Cycle Factory to Lalganesh in Guwahati as Union Home Minister Amit Shah landed in the capital city for a poll rally on Monday.
Strains of the party’s poll song, Akou Ebar Modi Sarkar (Modi government, one more time), reverberated among the massive gathering as Bihu dance troupes, queued on podiums at regular intervals along the road, broke into performances to accord a grand welcome.
“Amidst a sea of people at the roadshow in Guwahati, Assam,” Shah’s official social media handle posted, as videos of the Minister waving and showering flower petals on party supporters were shared across the party’s online media.
Minister Shah is in the city to drum up support for BJP’s Guwahati Lok Sabha candidate, Bijuli Kalita Medhi.
Medhi will be taking on Congress’ Mira Borthakur as Guwahati goes to polls on May 7.
Earlier in the day, Shah was received at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by the state BJP’s who’s who of the state BJP.
State Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita, State BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, along with other state dignitaries, were among the names who were present at the airport.
In a parallel incident on Monday, the Assam police reportedly arrested the State Congress’ online war-room coordinator for creating and sharing a “fake video” of Minister Shah.
Informing this on his social media handle, Chief Minister Sarma said that the individual has been identified as Reetom Singh.
Meanwhile, the Assam Police has slapped a slew of IPC Sections on Singh along with Section 66F of the IT Act (cyber terrorism).
This is Minister Shah’s second visit to the state amidst the Lok Sabha Polls.
Previously on April 11, he was in Dibrugarh to address a poll rally in support of the party’s candidate for the seat and Union Minister Sarbanada Sonowal.
