Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on former state Congress chief Bhupen Borah over his sudden decision to join the BJP, alleging that the move has vindicated long-standing suspicions within the Congress about internal information leaks.
Gaurav Gogoi questioned Borah’s alleged role in the flow of information to the Assam Chief Minister.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Gogoi said, “There were many rumours regarding the close relationship between Himanta Biswa Sarma and Bhupen Borah. We tried our best not to believe these rumours and speculation. We always wondered as to how the information relating to confidential meetings was known to a particular journalist close to Himanta Biswa Sarma. But now these rumours have come to light, and it is true.”

He further accused Borah of quickly aligning with the BJP leadership after stepping down from the Congress, saying the timing of the move has raised serious political questions.
“A day after leaving the Congress party, Bhupen Borah has no qualms about joining the BJP and surrendering to Himanta Biswa Sarma. Why, within a day of resignation, did you join Himanta Biswa Sarma?” Gogoi questioned.
The Congress leader further went on to call Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as “Assam’s Jinnah”, urging him to stop issuing “Hindu certificates” to politicians. Reacting to CM Sarma describing Borah as the “last Hindu leader” in the Congress, Gogoi accused Sarma of attempting to polarise politics in the state. He alleged that the BJP leader was acting as “Assam’s Jinnah” and urged him to stop issuing “Hindu certificates” to politicians.
Gogoi recalled the legacy of the Congress party and said, “The Congress is like an ocean; we are all just water drops in it. The Congress was there long before our fathers and forefathers existed. Bhupen Borah’s leaving will not impact our party’s prospects in the Assembly polls.”
