Guwahati: Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday strongly condemned the alleged racist abuse faced by women from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi, describing the incident as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable.”
In a post on X, Gogoi said, “The racist abuse faced by Arunachali women in Delhi is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.” He said that no citizen should be made to feel like an outsider in their own country.
“This incident is a stark reminder that prejudice against people from the North-East still persists,” he stated.
Notably, three women from Arunachal Pradesh were allegedly subjected to racial abuse and intimidation by a couple in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, following a dispute over repair work at their rented apartment.
According to the Delhi Police, a case has been registered at the Malviya Nagar police station under BNS sections 79 (word intended to insult a woman’s modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 3(5) (common intention) and 196 (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language) against Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jai.
Gogoi asserted that the matter should not be brushed aside as a routine dispute, and urged authorities to take swift and decisive action.
According to police, the incident took place around 3:30 pm on February 20 while drilling and electrical work were underway at the women’s fourth-floor rented apartment for the installation of an air conditioner.
“During the process, dust and debris from the work fell to the floor below, prompting objections from the residents, Harish Singh and his wife. What began as an argument over the repair work soon escalated into a heated verbal argument,” police said.
The Congress leader said, “This incident cannot be dismissed as a routine dispute. The authorities need to act swiftly, ensure accountability under the law, and provide the complainants full protection and support. Equal citizenship should translate into equal respect and equal protection in every part of the country.”
