Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi has accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of allegedly seeking the support of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Gogoi alleged that the move exposes the “power-centric” nature of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), pointing out that the Chief Minister had long labelled the AIUDF a communal party but was now depending on its support to secure a seat in the Upper House.
The APCC President claimed that the three AIUDF MLAs, Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, Nizamuddin Choudhury, and Zakir Hussain Laskar, had signed the nomination papers of the NDA’s Rajya Sabha candidate, Pramod Boro of the UPPL.
Gogoi criticised the Chief Minister for allegedly using polarising rhetoric against the minority community in his speeches in the past, including terms like “Miya” and “Osinaki.”
He added that the Chief Minister has encouraged societal divisions through aggressive eviction drives and the use of “bulldozer politics.”
He further noted that the moment the BJP faced a shortfall in numbers for the third Rajya Sabha seat, the same AIUDF, previously branded as communal, suddenly became acceptable to the ruling party, exposing the sheer power-centric nature of its politics.

Further challenging CM Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi asked if the persistent fear-mongering and harsh rhetoric used in public rallies were merely political theatre. He stressed that a leader who claims to prioritise the protection of Assam, safeguarding his own chair now appears to be the paramount concern.
“The Chief Minister often speaks about ideology and principles, but the moment his power is threatened, those principles disappear,” Gogoi said.
On the other hand, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia also asserted that these events offer clear proof that the AIUDF functions as the BJP’s “B-team.”
