Guwahati: Gauhati University (GU) has achieved a significant milestone, securing the ninth position among state public universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, marking a notable four-rank improvement from last year.
The rankings, released in New Delhi on Thursday by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, also placed GU 33rd among all universities across the country and 52nd overall among higher education institutions.
Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu lauded the achievement, describing it as a moment of pride for the state.
GU Vice Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta credited the university community for the success.
“This accomplishment is the result of coordinated efforts at every level — from faculty and students to administrative staff. Each contribution, big or small, has played a vital role in raising our academic standards and ensuring that GU meets and surpasses both national and global expectations,” he said.
Mahanta added that the achievement would further inspire the university to contribute towards building a vibrant knowledge-driven society and advancing the goals of ‘Viksit Assam’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
Registrar Utpal Sarma also congratulated the academic fraternity and students, stressing that their dedication and commitment to excellence have been key to the institution’s steady rise in rankings.

The recognition comes close on the heels of GU’s performance in international assessments, where it was ranked in the 351–400 bracket globally and secured the 48th position in India in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Rankings.
The NIRF 2025 rankings, now in their 10th edition, assessed institutions across 17 categories and subject domains.
This year’s evaluation also introduced a new category on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), measuring performance in environmentally sustainable practices.
