Gas continued to leak on Sunday from a well of Rudrasagar oil field of ONGC in Upper Assam’s Sibsagar district, raising serious concern about the safety and well being of the local people.
The blowout took place on June 12 at Well No RDS 147A of Rig No SKP 135 of Rudrasagar oil field of ONGC at Barichuk in Bhatiapar.
SK Petro Services, a Sibsagar-based company owned by Krishna Agarwala, Vikash Pareek, and Radha Agarwala, was operating the well on behalf of ONGC.
The leakage of gas continued for the fourth day at a well, following which 72 families have been shifted to a relief camp, sources said.
The affected families have been shifted to a relief camp set up in nearby Bangaon village, the sources said.
Local villagers complained about the pungent smell of gas, and are not able to light their stoves to cook food.
Fortunately, the well has not caught fire yet, and no one is hurt in the incident, the officials claimed.
A team of ONGC engineers on Saturday took over the operational control of Well No RDS 147, where the blowout took place, the sources informed.
The Crisis Management Team (CMT) is working on war-footing to control the leakage, the sources said.
While the exact cause of the blowout has not been specified, Vikram Saxena, Director (Technology & Field Services) of ONGC is monitoring the well killing process, the sources said.
It is an old crude well, which has been without production for some time, and a perforation job was going on for zone transfer at the time of the blowout.
As per reports, production was supposed to start from a new zone after the completion of the perforation job.
