Guwahati: In a significant political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, senior leader and former APCC chief Bhupen Borah has reportedly resigned from the Congress.
Sources said the former president has sent his resignation letter to All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge. The development, however, has not been officially confirmed by either the All India Congress Committee or the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.
While the contents of the resignation letter have not yet been disclosed, party insiders term the development a “serious setback” for the state unit as it gears up for a crucial electoral contest in 2026.
Adding to the political speculation, there are strong indications that Bora could formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party on February 20. Although no official confirmation has been issued, the timing of his resignation has fuelled discussions within Assam’s political circles.
Soon after submitting his resignation, Bora removed his Congress title from his profile on X (formerly Twitter). The move was widely viewed as a clear sign that he had parted ways with the party.
Borah has had a long association with the Indian National Congress in Assam. He represented the Bishnupur constituency as a Congress MLA from 2006 to 2016 and emerged as one of the party’s key organisational leaders in the state. On July 24, 2021, he was appointed president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), a position he held during a particularly challenging period for the party.

His tenure as state Congress chief coincided with efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party’s organisational base in the aftermath of successive electoral setbacks.
