GUWAHATI: One person lost his life when a section of an under-construction flyover collapsed in Baihata Chariali, Kamrup, during the early hours of Wednesday.
The victim, identified as a resident of Khandikar in Rangia, was reportedly a street hawker.
The fatal accident unfolded on the Baihata bypass of National Highway 27, where the construction of the flyover was underway.
Reportedly, a beam from the top of the flyover gave way due to overloading and crushed the person and a nearby truck.
It has been assumed that the beam fell due to vibrations generated during the construction of the flyover by Nirmal Builders.
The collapse prompted public outrage, resulting in protests that led to the closure of the road from Tezpur to Guwahati via Nalbari Mangad.
Locals expressed grave concerns about the safety standards at the construction site, alleging a disregard for regulations and protocols.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse, aiming to ascertain accountability and prevent future tragedies.
The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the paramount importance of stringent safety measures in construction projects.
Earlier, on February 21, a worker lost his life after falling from an under-construction flyover in Kampur, Nagaon district.
The deceased had reportedly tripped and fell from the flyover while working at the site.
