Guwahati: Two senior doctors and three staff members of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) have been suspended after a four-day-old infant was found dead in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a top official said on Tuesday.
The action follows an inquiry into the August 18 incident, when the newborn, admitted for infection and jaundice, was discovered hanging from the wires of medical equipment inside the NICU.
The baby had been delivered at the same hospital.
GMCH superintendent Devajit Choudhury said the suspensions were based on recommendations of a committee report.

Those suspended include the head of the paediatrics department, Dr. Anupama Deka, associate professor Dr. Dipankar Hazarika, staff nurses Chandana Nath and Gomti Devi, and ICU technician Ishan Jyoti Talukdar.
A departmental inquiry has also been initiated against five of the accused, Choudhury confirmed.
In addition, two trainee doctors—Hrishikesh Thakuria and Pooja—have been rusticated for six months.
Authorities have termed the case a serious lapse in patient care and said corrective measures are being implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
