GUWAHATI: A devastating landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, claimed the lives of at least five individuals, including three minors, in the Badarpur area of Karimganj district, on Tuesday night.
The victims, all from the same family, were identified as Roymun Nessa (55 years old), Sahida Khanam (18), Jahida Khanam (16), and Hamida Khanam (11).
Additionally, three-year-old, Mehdi Hassan, son of Mahimuddin, also died in the landslide.
According to Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das, the incident occurred around 12:45 am when a landslide struck the Gainachora (Bendargool) village area under the jurisdiction of Badarpur police station.
Upon receiving the alert, local authorities, along with Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDRF) personnel, swiftly launched a three-hour rescue operation to retrieve the victims’ bodies.
The tragedy underscores the severe impact of ongoing torrential rains across the region.

Meanwhile, the ASDMA has reported that Karimganj district is the hardest hit by torrential rain, with nearly 96,000 residents affected.
In response to the crisis, the government has established 11 relief camps and distribution centres, providing shelter to 3,168 displaced individuals in the district.
The incessant rainfall has led to a significant rise in the water level of the Brahmaputra River, exacerbating the flood situation.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh on June 18 and June 19.
