Guwahati: The inaugural ‘First Global Assamese Conference’ is scheduled to take place from January 16 to 18, 2026, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati.
This landmark three-day convention serves as a crucial platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and a collective commitment towards preserving Assam’s historical tapestry, fostering sustainable development, and significantly engaging the global Assamese diaspora.
The First Global Assamese Conference is the focal point and annual convention of the Global Assamese Engagement Initiative.
This initiative is driven by a powerful mission to harness the passion, expertise, and commitment of the global Assamese diaspora to contribute meaningfully to Assam’s development.
Supported by individuals and both overseas and local organisations, it envisions creating a comprehensive roadmap for impactful contributions through fostering vital connections and collaborations.
The initiative aims to move “one step at a time” by engaging in specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound grassroots initiatives. The annual convention is designed not only for agenda-setting and review but also as a primary hub for networking among participants.
This collective effort seeks to empower the global Assamese community to come together for causes they deeply care about. Discussions around shaping further objectives are encouraged at the conference.
The convention’s robust agenda is structured across three distinct thematic days, each dedicated to a critical aspect of Assam’s future:

This day will delve into Assam’s rich and diverse history, spanning its ancient civilisations, medieval conflicts, and colonial influences. Sessions include a welcome address by a prominent historian, a keynote speech on early civilisations like the Kamarupa kingdom, and a panel discussion on archaeological findings.
Midday sessions will feature workshops on the Ahom Dynasty, exploring its military strategies, administrative innovations, and cultural contributions, as well as medieval conflicts and cultural flourishing.
The afternoon will cover colonial and modern Assam through case studies and interactive discussions on socio-political changes and the journey to independence.
The day culminates in an evening session focused on drafting a roadmap for preserving Assam’s historical heritage and securing commitment pledges from stakeholders.
Day 2: Sustainable Development Strategy in Assam
Bringing together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders, this day will strategise the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) tailored to Assam’s unique socio-economic and environmental context.
The morning will set the stage with a welcome address by a senior government official and a keynote speech on global and national SDG frameworks, highlighting Assam’s progress. A panel will discuss challenges and opportunities, including climate change, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable agriculture.
Focused workshops will cover climate action and resilience (disaster management, renewable energy), sustainable agriculture and food security, and inclusive economic growth.
Collaborative initiatives in the afternoon will include case studies presentations and interactive sessions to propose actionable SDG strategies, fostering partnerships across sectors.
The evening session is dedicated to drafting a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable development and securing commitment pledges from various stakeholders.
