Guwahati: In a heartwarming development from Assam’s Kaziranga National Park, a newborn elephant calf has been named ‘Mayabini’ — after the late singer Zubeen Garg’s beloved song that resonated deeply with his fans during his final journey.
Announcing the news on social media on Saturday night, Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said the female calf was born to ‘Kuwari’, one of the park’s elephants.
“Heartening news on #WorldAnimalDay — Kuwari, the elephant of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, has given birth to a healthy female calf! With immense affection and public goodwill, we’ve named her ‘Mayabini’ — a symbol of new life, hope, and harmony in the wild,” Patowary wrote on X.
The name ‘Mayabini’ carries an emotional connection to Zubeen Garg’s fans, as his song ‘Mayabini ratir buku’ became an anthem at his funeral.
The track, which the singer once said should be played when he dies, echoed through crowds who paid their last respects to the iconic Assamese musician.
In a separate development, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited Kaziranga National Park on Sunday.
Accompanied by his wife and senior officials, Yadav took a jeep safari through the park’s central range and admired the area’s famed one-horned rhinoceroses.
“The chief minister witnessed the park’s scenic beauty and reviewed the conservation efforts for wildlife,” an official said.
