Guwahati: An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale hit Assam early on Sunday morning with tremors felt across the state, including the state’s capital Guwahati.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7.47 am at a depth of 15 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface with the epicentre located in Udalguri district of Assam.
The tremors were felt across several regions, including Dhekiajuli, Tawang, Barpeta, Goalpara, North Lakhimpur, Itanagar, Jorhat, Tezpur, Golaghat, Guwahati, Nagaon, and Dimapur.
However, no incidents of loss of life or damage to property were reported due to the earthquake till the filing of this report.
The Northeastern states, including Assam, fall in the high seismic zone, with earthquakes frequently hitting the region.
An earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck Assam on September 26 this year.
Another earthquake of magnitude 3.6 on the Richter scale hit the state on September 1.
As per the country’s seismic zoning map, the total area is classified into four seismic zones. Zone V is seismically the most active region, while zone II is the least.
Approximately, 11 percent area of the country falls in zone V, 18 percent in zone IV, 30 percent in zone III, and remaining in zone II.

According to seismologists, the region experiences frequent earthquakes as it falls in the seismic V zone.
Assam has witnessed two major earthquakes in its history – 1897 and 1950.
