Guwahati: Despite the efforts of the Assam Police to reduce cases of road accidents on the New Year’s Eve, 79 cases of accident were reported in Assam.
According to official sources, on the night of December 31, as many as 79 road accidents were reported in Assam, and five persons have reportedly died.
A total of 47 road accidents were reported in Guwahati city, while 32 road accidents took place in other parts of Assam.
Braving the winter chill, police in Guwahati had put up barricades in different part of the city to check drunken driving and avert road accidents.
Several people were fined after they failed the breath-analyzer tests, and were not allowed to drive their vehicles. Still, the road accidents could not be averted.
Apart from the incidents of road accident, 16 cases of drunken brawls were reported on the night of December 31 in Guwahati.
