Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the Dinesh Goswami Flyover in Guwahati’s Bharalumukh at 5 pm on Wednesday. This move is aimed at easing traffic congestion at the railway crossing, and is expected to improve vehicular flow along one of the city’s busiest corridors.

The Chief Minister of Assam will inaugurate the flyover in the presence of senior government officials and local representatives. CM Sarma confirmed that construction of the Y-shaped structure has been completed ahead of schedule.

The 1.2-kilometre-long flyover, constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 100 crore, has been named after former Union Minister Dinesh Goswami, as a tribute to his contribution to Assam and national politics.

The structure will link Machkhowa with the Shantipur Swiss Gate area, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the city.

The flyover was earlier expected to be opened by March 10. During an inspection last month, the Chief Minister had indicated that work was nearing completion. The development has also led to the permanent closure of Railway Gate No. 9, with commuters now provided an alternative elevated route.

Dinesh Goswami, a prominent leader of the Asom Gana Parishad, was credited by the Chief Minister for playing a pivotal role in enhancing Assam’s share of central grants from a 70:30 to a ratio of 90:10.

Highlighting Goswami’s legacy, CM Sarma said the late leader had a profound influence on shaping Assam’s political and financial trajectory.

“He was a major force in politics, representing in the national political landscape. Dinesh Goswami was the person who changed the share of central grants and aids for Assam from a 70-30 percentage share to a 90-10 percentage share. Because of that, even today, the developmental loans that we take, the Union government repays 90 per cent of it, and the Assam government has to repay only 10 per cent,” he said.
