GUWAHATI: In a joint operation, Assam Rifles and Tinsukia police successfully apprehended two suspected cadres of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) near the Assam-Arunachal border in Phaneng, Tinsukia, on Wednesday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as self-styled Sergeant Major Bibek Asom and Mrigen Asom, the local press reported.
The operation follows a series of recent arrests made by Assam Police in connection to ULFA-I activities.
On December 19, three individuals—Asim Adhikari, Moon Debnath, and Rupjyoti Das—were captured in Guwahati’s Maligaon area during a planned operation.
The trio was found in possession of a pistol and ammunition, with Adhikari suspected to be closely associated with ULFA-I, residing in Guwahati under the guise of a computer operator.
The December 19 arrests came on the heels of another operation on December 17, where four individuals were detained, suspected to be linked to the recent Sivasagar grenade blast.
Amid escalating tensions and threats, the Assam Police issued a stern message on December 23, vowing to eliminate all threats within the purview of the law.
DGP GP Singh, without explicitly naming ULFA-I, highlighted that groups formerly based in Bangladesh are now issuing threats from camps in Myanmar.
Assam has witnessed a surge in grenade attacks, with three incidents occurring within a span of 22 days, from November 22 to December 14.
The most recent attack near the Lichubari Military Camp in Jorhat district on December 14 targeted the Army camp.
Earlier attacks occurred in Tinsukia and Sivasagar districts on November 22 and December 9, respectively, with ULFA-I claiming responsibility in a press release on December 10.
As Assam grapples with heightened security concerns, the recent arrests highlights law enforcement’s commitment to quelling insurgent activities and ensuring the safety of the state and its residents.
