GUWAHATI: A disturbing incident unfolded on the streets of Guwahati, after a group of students of Cotton University allegedly attacked a woman and her husband on Sunday night.
Reportedly, the students, majority of whom are inmates of the University’s Mahendra Nath Deka Phukan (MNDP) Hostel, were thrashing an elderly man in suspicion of theft when the couple intervened, leading to their assault.
According to the woman, the boys, allegedly slapped her husband before physically assaulting her. The locals in the area promptly alerted the police about the incident.
Upon reaching the scene, the Panbazaar police swiftly took the woman for a medical examination and are currently investigating the incident, seeking to establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
“Several young men were ruthlessly assaulting an elderly man, accusing him of being a thief. When my husband and I intervened to stop them, they responded by slapping my husband and hitting me on the head. After that they went into the hostel and didn’t come out,” the woman told a local daily.
Contrary to the accusations, hostel authorities denied that the boys involved were students of Cotton University.
This incident, however, is not the first instance of violence involving Cotton University students.
Earlier in March, the Panbazar police had arrested four students from the MNDP Hostel on charges of assaulting the district general secretary of BJP Guwahati city unit and an NF Railway employee at Guwahati Railway Station in separate incidents.
The arrests were made in connection with two FIRs, citing violations of sections 143, 279, 294, 307, and 326 of the IPC.
Additionally, in 2019, in another incident, a group of university students found themselves in legal trouble, facing arrests for purportedly assaulting students from a different educational institution.
