GUWAHATI: A first-year Arts student of Cotton University in Guwahati is in critical condition after reportedly leaping from the second floor of the Manik Chandra building (MCB) on the university grounds, on Tuesday.
According to witnesses, the student plunge from the building prompting swift action from fellow students who informed university authorities.
The first-year Higher Secondary student, is currently receiving medical care in the ICU at Nemcare Hospital in the city.
The university’s Students Union told a local daily that the student had jumped off from the second floor of the building but they aren’t sure why she attempted to take the extreme step.
“We immediately rushed the student to the hospital. The student is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and as of now, her condition is critical,” a representative told the press.
While the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, there are suspicions that it may be a case of suicide.
The University’s Students Union added, “We suspect it to be a suicide attempt; however, we cannot confirm it.”
Reportedly, a note found in the student’s room, read, “It was all my fault”, further fuelling suspicion of a suicide attempt.
This event follows a similar tragedy that happened last year on December 2, when a 21-year-old girl student of Cotton University had allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Goreswar, Assam.
The victim, a fifth-semester BA student, highlighted the ongoing mental health challenges faced by students, raising concerns about the need for enhanced support systems within educational institutions.
The university administration has not yet released an official statement on the incident, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the student’s critical condition.
