GUWAHATI: The Assam Police, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have arrested eight drug traffickers and the seizure of contraband worth a staggering ₹12 crores in various operations spanned across Assam’s Cachar and Karimganj districts.
Around 568 grams of heroin and 43,000 yaba tablets were confiscated during these operations on Friday and Saturday. Taking to a popular micro-blogging website Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared an image of the seized items and provide insights into one of the busts.
“Based on a tip off, @karimganjpolice conducted a special operation last night where 568 grams of suspected heroin contained in 52 soap cases were seized from secret chambers of a vehicle coming from a neighbouring State in Gandharajbari under Ratabari PS. Three people have been arrested in this connection,” he wrote, adding that
On Friday night, acting on reliable information, the Karimganj Police with an aimt to seize drugs and detained traffickers, launched a targeted operation with credible inputs. The operation at areas under the jurisdiction of the Ratabari Police Station led to the arrest of three individuals.
Elaborating on a separate operation, Superintendent of Police (SP) for the Cachar district, Numal Mahatta, detailed another bust to the press. He informed that at around 4:30 pm on Friday, acting on BSF intelligence, a hatchback vehicle was intercepted. “We discovered 30,000 Yaba Tablets in the vehicle, leading to the arrest of two individuals from Silchar,” Mahatta was quoted as saying.
Continuing the crackdown on the drug menace in the state, a subsequent search operation in tandem with the CRPF near the Assam-Meghalaya border in Cachar’s Kalain area resulted in the recovery of 13,000 Yaba Tablets. Mahatta recounted, “Upon receiving a tip, our team descended on a location where a drug transaction was underway. Despite escape attempts by the suspects, our team apprehended them, seizing the drugs.” All the detainees have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
