Nagaon (Assam): Congress Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi and party MLA Sibamoni Bora were attacked by unidentified assailants on Sunday while campaigning for the upcoming panchayat elections in Assam’s Nagaon district.
Both leaders sustained minor injuries, and their vehicles were damaged in the incident, according to police reports.
The attack occurred in Upar-Dumdumia village under the jurisdiction of Dhing police station.
The leaders were en route from a campaign meeting in Balikatia to another at Jengoni when their convoy was intercepted by a group of 10–12 masked individuals dressed in black.
The attackers allegedly used iron rods and hockey sticks to smash the windshields of the vehicles.
Police confirmed that personal security officers (PSOs) assigned to the Congress leaders were also injured during the assault.
An FIR has been filed by Bordoloi at the Solguri outpost, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Following the attack, Bordoloi and Bora received first aid at a local health centre.
Speaking to reporters, Bordoloi described the ordeal, stating that they had to take cover under their SUVs to escape the blows from the attackers.
He condemned the incident, alleging it was a “pre-planned attack” orchestrated by the ruling BJP amid the heightened political climate leading up to the polls.
“This is not the first time such incidents have occurred in Nagaon,” Bordoloi added, recalling earlier attacks during the Samaguri bypolls and similar incidents involving other Congress leaders.
MLA Sibamoni Bora also expressed shock, saying, “In my entire political career, I’ve never faced anything like this. This is the third time I’ve been targeted since becoming an MLA. The BJP has dragged politics in Assam to an all-time low.”
Assam is scheduled to hold panchayat elections in two phases on May 2 and May 7 across 27 districts—the first such election since the delimitation of constituencies.
The counting of votes for both phases will take place on May 11.
