Guwahati: The Congress on Tuesday announced the constitution of its Pradesh Election Committee in Assam, appointing state unit president Gaurav Gogoi as its chairman ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The 35-member committee includes Debabrata Saikia, Rakibul Hussain, Pradyut Bordoloi, Bhupen Kumar Borah, Ripun Borah, Paban Singh Ghatowar, Wajid Ali Chaudhary, Rosilina Tirkey, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Pradeep Sarkar and Arun Dutta Mazumdar.
In addition to the 35 members, the committee will also include the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) General Secretary (Organisation), heads of all APCC frontal organisations, and chairpersons of the SC, OBC, Minority and Adivasi Congress Departments, as well as the Tea Garden Cell of the APCC.
At present, the ruling BJP holds 64 seats in the Assam Assembly, while its allies—Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)—have nine, seven and three MLAs respectively.
In the opposition, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has 15 members, CPI(M) has one legislator, along with one Independent MLA.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that the Congress has turned into a party for Miyas, adding that the party is unlikely to receive votes from any other group in the state in the forthcoming elections.

The Chief Minister alleged that the Congress has been reduced to relying on the support of Miya voters.
CM Sarma said, “Congress is just a party for Miyas. This time, apart from Miyas, no other person will cast any vote for them. I have been in politics for a long time, and this time Assamese people are ready to fight.” “People will not let the Miya party come to Assam. I think, if we maintain this trend for a few more years, our state will be protected,” he added.
